Liftgate Platforms: Materials & Options

A closer look at various liftgate platform materials and uses.

Many liftgate models are offered with a variety of different platform materials and sizes. Considering the lifting application, one type of material might be better suited for the job than another. Here is a brief description of each of the platform types offered by Tommy Gate.

TREADPLATE STEEL  (TP)

"Treadplate Steel" platforms are composed of a solid piece of steel with a textured treadplate surface. While incredibly durable, Treadplate Steel platforms are heavier than other platform options and on the largest Flatbed and Van applications can require a bit of muscle to handle. TP platforms are also corrosion-prone and unable to be galvanized. In arid climates this may not be an issue and the platform may maintain its finish for its entire lifespan. However, in humid climates, or where the platform is frequently exposed to moisture or salt and grime from the roadways, TP platforms tend to corrode.

TP platforms are offered in one- and two-piece varieties with loading depths from 27-inches up to 42-inches deep.

EXTRUDED ALUMINUM  (EA)

Extruded Aluminum platforms are the lightest of all platform materials. Composed of 5-inch tongue-in-groove aluminum extrusions, EA platforms are durable, corrosion-resistant, and more often than not offer longer loading tapers (making the rolling of heavy cargo onto the platform easier). EA platforms are not able to be galvanized, but they do not need to be. As is, they compliment a galvanized liftgate frame nicely and offer the maximum level of corrosion protection.

EA platforms are offered in one- and two-piece varieties with loading depths from 27-inches up to 48-inches deep.

TOMMY TRACTION  (TT)

Tommy Traction platforms are composed of a porous steel floor and serrated surface, offering the highest level of traction of any platform material. The aerated design allows liquids (water, oil, etc.) to pass freely through the floor of the loading surface. A favorite of tire transporters, TT platforms are also one of the many platform styles able to support the Folding Tire Rack option. For regions or applications where corrosion is an issue, TT platforms are available with the galvanized liftgate option.

TT platforms are only offered as a one-piece platform with loading depths of 27 inches (for pickups and service bodies) and 33 inches (for flatbed and van applications).

BAR GRATE  (BG)

Bar Grate platforms are composed of a porous steel floor and smooth loading surface. The BG platform offers the highest level of aeration, allowing large amounts of debris (mud, soil, etc.) to pass freely through the loading surface (as well as being notable for reducing wind resistance while the vehicle is in motion). For regions or applications where corrosion is an issue, BG platforms are available with the galvanized liftgate option.

BG platforms are only offered as a one-piece platform with loading depths of 27 inches (for pickups and service bodies) and 33 inches (for flatbed and van applications).

By identifying the proper platform for any given lifting application, operators can ensure that their liftgate configuration not only suits their lifting needs, but is optimized to offer the greatest level of efficiency and convenience.
